This is a short video clip of me playing Nintendo's Donkey Kong on the Colecovision retro video games console.
Published by Coleco in 1982.
Designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, Donkey Kong sees you controlling Mario, then known simply as Jumpman, who happened to be a carpenter, rather than a plumber... on a mission to save his girlfriend from the marauding ape, Donkey Kong.
The story behind this is that Kong was Mario's pet, but he was mistreated, and has kidnapped Mario's girlfriend to get revenge.
Deep stuff.... or something.
Gameplay is classic platforming... climb the ladders, avoid dangers such as barrels, flames, etc, pick up power-ups, eg. hammers... you get the picture.
This is all fairly basic stuff in this day and age, but back then, it was ground breaking, and defined the whole platforming genre.
Anyway, this was by far and away the best version of the game at the time, only to be matched much later by Nintendos own offering on their NES system.
This and the other retro gaming clips on this site aren't intended as full game reviews, but are simply to give viewers who weren't around when these games were popular, an idea of what video games used to be like.
